A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
